If you are wondering what fourth grade is all about....here is what's in store! READING
This year's students will participate in two reading blocks. The Fiction Reading block will focus on shared reading inquiry along with building vocabulary skills. Â The Nonfiction Reading block will integrate science and social studies curricula while strengthening reading strategies.~ Students will learn a variety of comprehension skills such as recognizing and interpreting elements in poetry, drama, fiction and nonfiction texts.

WRITING Fourth grade is a BIG year to show off those writing talents. ~Throughout the year fourth graders will participate in four assessments. Two of
these will be the writing process within the content areas such as reading, math, etc. The other two will be on-demand prompts. ~~We will become better authors through independent writing, individual and small group conferencing, and sharing time. We will also be improving our writing skills through word study, interactive writing, studying elements of the writing process, handwriting, grammar, using reference materials (glossary, dictionary and thesaurus), journaling, studying author's craft, and most importantly by writing in a meaningful way throughout all content areas. ~In fourth grade, students will experience writing many
different literary pieces. Although our main focus will be personal and imaginative narratives, we will also write in other genres such as poetry, letters, learning logs, journals, and informational and practical compositions.
MATH ~ Fourth graders will work to become master problem solvers in math. Students will work together to become problem solvers by studying problems, learning strategies to solve problems, and working together in teams to create and
solve additional problems using the content knowledge and strategies they learn during math lessons. We will continue to expand on students' prior knowledge of math. We will explore and master concepts of five major NCSOS Math Goals throughout the year. Number and Operations- understanding place value (hundredths through ten thousands), representations of numbers, comparing and ordering numbers, estimation, fluency in multiplication (two-digit X two-digit) and division (three-digit by two-digit), relationships between operations, fractions, and problem
solving strategies . Measurement- understanding area and perimeter, developing strategies to determine area and perimeter, and solving problems involving measurement. Continuing to gain knowledge of standard and metric measure. Geometry- geometric properties and relationships, coordinate system (describing location and position and using first quadrant),~parallelism and perpendicularity, ~and transformations(reflections, translations, rotations) of plane figures. Data Analysis and Probability- Understanding and using graphs, probability, and data analysis. Collecting, organizing, analyzing, and displaying data to solve problems. Distribution of data using median, range, mode. Solving problems by comparing sets of related data. Experiments and lists of outcomes and probability. Algebra- Understanding and verifying mathematical relationships, changing quantities, proportions. Translating among symbols, numbers, pictures, and verbal representations of number relationships. Orders of operations and the identity, commutative, associate, and distibutive properties.
SOCIAL STUDIESOur main study in Social Studies is our state, North Carolina. We will study North Carolina's geography, history, culture, people, regions, and natural resources through a variety of activities. We will also learn about economic, social, and political institutions
throughout our state. We will incorporate activities relating to our state in many ways.
SCIENCE In Science we will make observations and conduct investigations to study and build an understanding of four overall concepts. The goals include: Understanding Animal behavior and Adaptations, Understanding the Composition and uses of rocks and minerals, Understanding of Magnetism and Electricity, and Understanding how food provides energy and materials for growth and repair of the body.
Other Curriculum AreasIn addition to these core content areas we will also be studying other curriculum areas that include: Computer and Technology Skills, Guidance, Information Skills, and Arts Education (Art and Music). |
