Academics
Reading: Our reading program incorporates many different components. We use Junior Great Books (JGB) as our main fiction reading program. This program focuses on reading and discussing complex texts. Your child will receive a discussion grade and a writing grade for each JGB story. He or she will also complete an occasional test in JGB. We will do many activities related to each story and read many other texts. The other main component of our reading program is our non-fiction reading bock. This block incorporates science and social studies with reading skills.
Independent Reading: It is very important that your child read every day. To this end, we will be challenging each student to a 40 in 4th Grade Book Challenge. This challenges your child to read 40 books in 4th grade. These books will be tracked in your child's homework notebook.
Writing: Students will receive a writing grade with each Junior Great Book unit. Students will also maintain journals in non-fiction and math. Writing is integrated into every subject!
Science and Social Studies: Science and Social Studies are integrated into our non-fiction block. Fourth graders study North Carolina in Social Studies.
Math: Our class is paired with Mrs. Godley's class in fourth grade. Mrs. Godley teaches math and Mrs. Lord teaches the non-fiction block. We will switch classes for these subjects.
Homework: Students may occasionally be assigned homework. If so this will be recorded in the agenda along with any other important information. It is imperative that you check your child's agenda each night. Your child will also record their behavior points for the day in the agenda. Please sign your child's agenda after checking it each night.
